Ausfahrt Is Not a City: Essential German Road Signs
German takes time to learn, but a few everyday road signs can make driving, walking, and finding your way around much less confusing from day one.
Entry, exit, and route changes
These are the words you will see again and again on highways, in car parks, and around towns.
Ausfahrt and Einfahrt
- Ausfahrt means the way out or exit. You will see it on highways, parking areas, and shopping centres. It is not the name of a city.
- Einfahrt means the way in or entrance. It is the opposite of Ausfahrt.
Easy memory trick: ein means in, and aus means out.
Umleitung and Baustelle
- Umleitung means a diversion or alternate route. Follow its arrows when your usual road is closed or changed.
- Baustelle means a construction site. Expect workers, machinery, temporary signs, changed lanes, and sometimes delays.
Slow down in construction areas and follow temporary signs carefully; they may override the normal route.
Parking and walking
Parking rules
- Parken erlaubt means parking is allowed.
- Parken verboten means parking is not allowed.
Always check the full sign and any extra panel below it. It may limit parking by time, days, vehicle type, or permit.
Zebrastreifen
A Zebrastreifen is a marked pedestrian crossing — the black-and-white stripes look a little like a zebra.
Drivers should be especially alert and give people crossing priority. As a pedestrian, still look carefully and follow any traffic lights or other instructions at the crossing.
Before you set off
Remember: Ein means in; Aus means out.
Follow Umleitung arrows if your normal route is closed.
Expect temporary traffic changes near a Baustelle.
Read the full parking sign, including any smaller panels.
Stay alert at every Zebrastreifen and traffic-light crossing.

You do not need perfect German on day one. Learning a few useful signs makes everyday life easier, whether you are driving to university, finding a car park, or walking through a new city.
